In most cases, yes — and significantly so. If your drive has a physical fault, running software on it or opening it outside a cleanroom are two of the fastest ways to turn a recoverable situation into an unrecoverable one.

The problem with running software on a failing drive

Recovery software works by repeatedly reading the drive to reconstruct file structures. If the drive’s heads are failing or its platters are damaged, every additional power-on and read attempt causes further wear. A drive that might have yielded 90% of its data on the first proper imaging attempt may yield only 30% after being subjected to repeated software scans — or nothing at all.

The rule is simple: if a drive is making clicking, grinding, or beeping sounds — stop immediately. These are signs of head failure or mechanical damage. Continued use will worsen the failure.

The problem with opening the drive at home

Household air contains thousands of microscopic particles per cubic metre. Hard drive platters spin at 5,400–7,200 RPM with heads floating nanometres above the surface. A single particle landing on a spinning platter causes a head crash — physically gouging the platter and destroying data in that area permanently. This damage cannot be undone.

❌ Don’t do this
  • Run recovery software on a clicking drive
  • Power it on repeatedly to “check if it works”
  • Open the drive outside a cleanroom
  • Freeze the drive (common myth — causes condensation damage)
  • Try multiple labs without understanding the risks
✅ Do this instead
  • Stop using the drive immediately
  • Don’t power it on again
  • Keep it safe and cool (not frozen)
  • Send or bring it to a professional lab for assessment
  • Describe the symptoms honestly — it helps diagnosis

What if I’ve already tried software?

Don’t panic — depending on how much use the drive has had and the nature of the failure, recovery may still be possible. Tell us honestly what was attempted when you book your assessment. We assess each case on its current condition, not its history.
