Couriering a hard drive is straightforward, but the way you package it matters. A failed drive is already fragile; rough handling during transit can make a recoverable case unrecoverable.

How to package your drive safely

Internal (bare) drives: Wrap the drive in an anti-static bag if you have one (the silver or pink bags drives are often sold in). Then wrap it in several layers of bubble wrap — enough that the drive can’t shift inside the box. Place it in a sturdy cardboard box with padding on all sides. The drive should not move when you shake the box.

External drives: If the drive is still in its external enclosure, leave it in the enclosure — it provides extra protection. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap and box it securely.

Laptops: If you’re sending a laptop for data recovery, wrap it in bubble wrap and place it in a box with padding. Remove any loose items from the bag.

Which courier to use

We recommend The Courier Guy or RAM Couriers for domestic shipments. Both offer reliable tracked delivery with reasonable handling. Request door-to-door tracked service so you can monitor the parcel.

Avoid using the cheapest untracked services — the small saving isn’t worth the risk to your data.

What to include in the parcel

Include a note with your name, contact number, email address, and a brief description of the problem (e.g. “drive stopped being detected after loadshedding”). If you’ve already been in contact with us, include your job reference number.

What happens when it arrives

We’ll confirm receipt by email or WhatsApp the same day. Your drive will be assessed within 24 hours and you’ll receive a written quote with the likelihood of success. If you approve, recovery begins immediately. Your recovered data is returned on a new drive via the same courier service.
