Water damage to a hard drive is a genuine emergency — but it’s not automatically fatal. How you handle the drive in the hours after water exposure has a huge impact on whether recovery is possible.

What to do immediately

❌ Do NOT do this
  • Power on the drive — this causes short circuits and corrosion
  • Try to dry it with a hairdryer or in the sun
  • Put it in rice (a myth — doesn’t work and wastes time)
  • Leave it to dry out on its own
  • Wait days before seeking help
✅ Do this instead
  • Remove the drive from any power source immediately
  • Keep it wet — wrap in damp cloth or seal in a bag with a little water
  • Get it to a recovery lab as soon as possible
  • Tell us what liquid it was (clean water, seawater, coffee, etc.)

Why keep it wet?

This surprises most people. The reason is corrosion. When a wet drive dries out, mineral deposits and contaminants are left behind on the PCB and internal components. These cause corrosion and can permanently damage the electronics. Keeping the drive in a moist state slows this process until it can be professionally cleaned and assessed.

Is recovery possible after water damage?

In many cases, yes — particularly if the drive hasn’t been powered on after exposure and reaches us quickly. The platters themselves are sealed inside the drive casing and are often unaffected by water that has entered through the electronics or label area. The main risks are electronic failure and corrosion, both of which can be addressed professionally.

Saltwater or contaminated water (sewage, chemical spills) is more challenging than clean water due to accelerated corrosion. Let us know what type of water was involved when you contact us.

How quickly do I need to act?

The sooner, the better. Corrosion begins within hours in some cases. If your drive has been submerged or soaked, treat it as urgent and contact us immediately — we’ll advise you on the fastest way to get it to our Claremont lab.
