The average price increase across standard consumer hard drives has been reported at around 46% since September 2025. As a concrete example, the Seagate BarraCuda 24TB — a flagship consumer drive — was priced at approximately $500 in early 2026, a significant jump from earlier pricing.
Most strikingly, Western Digital announced that it had already sold out of hard drives for all of 2026. This is an extraordinary situation — a major global manufacturer with forward supply fully committed, leaving distributors and retailers unable to restock. The constraint has pushed buyers toward Seagate and Toshiba, compressing availability across the board.
SSD and NAND Flash: A Separate but Related Squeeze
The SSD market has its own pressure points. NAND flash memory — the underlying technology in every SSD — has been caught between two competing demand forces: the AI compute boom (which drives GPU memory demand from the same fabs) and continued strong consumer appetite for SSDs in laptops and desktops. HP reported that memory costs doubled in a single quarter in 2025, now accounting for 35% of total PC build material costs.
NVMe SSDs have seen more modest price increases than HDDs — partly because NAND production can be scaled faster than hard drive manufacturing — but availability of specific high-capacity enterprise NVMe models has tightened. For consumers, entry-level SATA SSDs remain relatively accessible, but the pricing trajectory across 2025 moved consistently upward after years of decline.
The Supply Side: Why Manufacturers Cannot Simply Produce More
Hard drive manufacturing is one of the most capital-intensive and technically constrained industries in electronics. Western Digital’s “sold out for all of 2026” situation illustrates the structural nature of this constraint. It is not a temporary inventory issue — it reflects the fact that forward production has been committed to hyperscale customers on long-term contracts, leaving no capacity for the spot market until 2027 at the earliest.
